Ferry from Livorno to Olbia (Moby, Grimaldi, about 7.5 to 9 h) or from Genoa (about 11 h). Return from Porto Torres if you like.

  1. Olbia and the north: Capo Testa and Santa Teresa Gallura, ferry from Palau to the La Maddalena islands.
  2. Gulf of Orosei: Cala Gonone and boat trips along the cliffs to coves you cannot reach by car.
  3. Ogliastra and the Orientale Sarda: The SS125 mountain road along the east coast and the Barbagia interior.
  4. Cagliari and the south: A city overlooking lagoons, and the beaches of Chia and Villasimius.
  5. The west: Oristano and Costa Verde: Ancient Tharros and the wild dunes of the Costa Verde.
  6. Bosa and the coast to Alghero: A colourful river town and a coastal road high above the sea.
  7. Alghero and Capo Caccia: A Catalan old town, cliffs, and the way home via Porto Torres.

Where to sleep: Aree di sosta and campsites. In season, towns near beaches often keep motorhomes out; out of season it is easier, but signs always apply. We found places with park4night.

  • Italian rules apply: park where a car may, no camping outside designated areas.
  • In season, towns near beaches often ban motorhome parking. Out of season it is quiet, but signs on site always apply.

Tip: The ferry from Livorno to Olbia takes about 7.5 to 9 hours, from Genoa around 11. Tirrenia and Moby let you stay in your own vehicle during the crossing.

Sardinia: turquoise water and beaches almost to ourselves

We went to Sardinia in October and it was one of our best trips ever. Instead of crowded beaches and car parks, long stretches of empty coast, warm days and water still fine for swimming. We stopped wherever we liked and found places for the night in the park4night app.

Go outside summer. For us, October is ideal.
